Catalog design and photography

This book exposes and celebrates our culture’s addiction to corn—from fast food to high fructose corn syrup—while using industrialized farming vernacular. A poster showing aerial photography of midwestern agricultural land folds around the cover of the book. The title (Good & Plenty) references the classic candy, and subhead (Bonding Weakly) describes the weak chemical bond present in high fructose corn syrup.

Wooden and quilt hamburger

I love hamburgers (more for for contemplation than consumption though). My obsession with hamburgers—and more importantly, what they stand for in American culture—became fully evident in my third term. This large (roughly 6x8 inches, 3 pound) wooden burger, made on the lathe and laser cutter, was a chance for me to spend some time in the shop and make something with a little more humor and irony than my design projects at the time.

The quilt was designed and sewn to be used as a projection screen for a project about the California institution that is In n' Out, and is now a permanent fixture on my bed.

Knit Shotgun

I spent fall of 2010 living on a wide expanse of property that doubled as duck hunting land. At first I considered buying myself a real gun for protection, but then I realized I should do it my way instead. This slightly-larger-than-life shotgun was modeled after my grandfather's Remington Wingtip. While it serves no actual protective purposes, running out of your trailer at 5:00am to scare duck hunters with a knit shotgun and curlers in your hair is still pretty entertaining.

Poster Series

Finals can be a scary time at Art Center. Students wander the hallways like zombies and have entire conversations consisting of a series of grunts. A few years ago, a friend and I decided to make some motivational posters to lift spirits. We printed them 48x36" and hung them up around campus.

Blog interface and design

Teachevil (an anagram of Helvetica) is a blog I began setting up in 2009 that aims to serve as a kind of cross between Design Observer and Motionographer for a younger generation. The design of the site is based around the fact that the currently accepted blog format is both boring and flawed--based predominantly on an outdated system of viewing information in a print-centric manner. The site will first appear in a layout that readers understand and expect from a blog, and as the content and readership grows, alternate views and sorting methods will be added for followers that would prefer a more contemporary and user-friendly viewing method.

Mission Statement:
Teachevil is an initiative born out of a desire to inform, educate, and inspire a new generation of designers. A variety of voices from every level of the industry offer a rich and dynamic collection of articles, essays, and commentary to create an invaluable resource for both established and aspiring designers.

This collaboration between students and their mentors aims to enrich the graphic design community by delivering what’s up-and-coming before it’s dead-and-gone. A little evil goes a long way.

In the summer of 2010, fifteen Art Center students from the Graphic Design, Environmental, Product and Transportation departments were selected to go to Berlin and participate in a sponsored studio abroad, dedicated to rebranding the Johnson & Johnson-owned Piz Buin (a premium sunscreen brand) to target Millennial Berliners.

My group was tasked with addressing the Berlin music scene—which consists mostly by semi-nocturnal anti-branding young people—and figuring out how to get them to engage with Piz Buin. Ultimately we embraced the night aesthetic and the appropriated street vernacular of the audience, to speak to them in their own visual language.

Also on the music team were Erica Li and Seth Baker, who were responsible for branded environments and collaborated on ideas and production. Package and brand extension design, process book design & photography by Amelia Stier.

Identity, stationery, brand extensions & brand guidelines

The Long Beach Museum of Art identity was outdated and inconsistent across web and printed material. For my logo I chose to use an asterisk, which represented a starfish (LBMA has an amazing ocean view) as well as the idea that there is always more in the art community. The posters and stationery are diecut to frame anything to that shows through, as if it were a piece of art alongside the other imagery. Additional asterisks were provided to be used in the system as graphic elements on promotional material.

This polemic piece promotes the idea of the local food movement via several delivery methods. Stickers echo the “places we’ve been” bumper-stickers, and a series of four pamphlets (to be distributed per-season) offer a portion of a poster on one side, and articles about the movement on the other.Text and images from Chefs on the Farm © 2008.
